The biggest stumbling block to effective mixed ability teaching would seem to be teacher attitude. Teachers lack the knowledge of strategies to use in the classroom to cater for a wide range of ability. Setting reduces the range of ability in the class but does not remove the fact that all pupils have individual needs and learning preferences. More staff training is needed to inform teachers about catering for the different learning styles.
