The artwork on the cover of the present book, which depicts an impoverished and ragged alchemist, is
from an engraved plate attributed to Augsburg printmaker Martin Engelbrecht (1684–1756) in the early eighteenth century. It is one print in a series on the theme Die Ursachen der Verarmung (the causes of impoverishment). We are grateful to William Schupbach, Wellcome Library (London), for providing this information. The full plate, included as the first of 24 color plates in this book, has two brief poems below the figure. |
